Shahid Mallya: A singer needs to be versatile

The song 'Hass Nache Le' from the upcoming movie 'Udta Punjab' is becoming quite a rage even before its release. And the credit for this goes to none other than singer Shahid Mallya who has hit the right notes combined with right expression which brings the song alive. Mallya, who was born into a musical family in Sri Ganganagar, has three songs in the film. His first major break was in Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor-starrer 'Mausam' in 2011. Since then he has sung several hit songs and worked with top music composers of the Hindi film industry, according to a report published in The Hindu.

For this young singer, getting a break in the Hindi film industry was not a cakewalk. "Before I got my first break I had struggled for seven-eight years. I would win all the competitions in schools and colleges and people even told me that I am good, so I knew that I am talented. My parents wanted me to become a playback singer so I came to Mumbai, ran from studio to studio, assisted people, gave music for TV serials," He also revealed that he has had his basic training from his father, who was an assistant of Rafi saheb (Mohammed Rafi), Shahid Mallya was quoted as saying in the report. But as luck would have it, the singer met music director Pritam through a friend and told him that he could sing well and that he should listen to him sing. "But then, Pritam forgot about me (laughs). Finally, after a month, I got a call from Pritam. He told me that he wanted to record my voice. I came to know that Pankaj ji (Pankaj Kapoor), director of 'Mausam', liked my voice and so I got two songs in the movie.

When asked if the popularity of a singer is predicated on the success of movies, Shahid said, "No, I think if the song is good it stays behind. We all love "allah ke bande hasde" by Kailash Kher, but how many of us can remember the name of the movie? Probably few. So, as long as the music touches one's soul, musicians are secure."
